"Mad Men" Is Good.
"Mad Men", a new series on AMC, is a finely crafted character study wrapped in stellar art direction. The show centers on a CD at a fictitious ad agency on Madison Avenue circa 1959/60. It's an HBO caliber show from Matthew Weiner, a writer/producer from the Sopranos. It seems to be a perfect platform to dissect the cultural sea change that began at that moment in American history.
Also, there are ad trivia bumpers during the show, as well as a Jack Daniels heavy ad buy that got them a few Jack references written into the show.
A great line about advertising: When asked by a judgemental beatnik how he sleeps at night, Don Draper, the hotshot CD, responds in a cool flash, "On a bed of money."
Aside from the highbrow hoohaa, everybody and everything looks sharp - perfect shirts, dialed in hair styles, O.G. modern furniture and no wine - just cocktails sweet cheeks.
Check it out.
(Update: There is wine poured in the 5th or 6th episode - after many a round of cocktails.)
